Petrified wood: a natural stone formed from the fossilization of wood
Petrified wood, also called fossilized wood, is a natural stone formed millions of years ago. An ancient tree transformed by a slow process of silica mineralization, it retains the details of its original structure while becoming a true mineral.
Each piece is unique, revealing natural variations ranging from brown to red, sometimes deep black.
Origin and formation of petrified wood
Petrified wood forms when wood is rapidly buried under mineral-rich sediments, often following volcanic eruptions. Silica-laden water then penetrates the organic matter and gradually replaces the wood cells.
A unique plant fossil
A true fragment of natural history, petrified wood is sought after by collectors for its patterns, veins and natural colors.
